The National Council of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has named the University of North Georgia's (ÎçÒ¹¿ì²¥) SPS chapter a 2021 Distinguished Chapter.
SPS is a professional association designed for students and their advisers. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics, not just those majoring in physics.
ÎçÒ¹¿ì²¥'s bachelor's degree in physics prepares students for graduate studies in physics and related fields, employment in various technical positions, and secondary physics education.
Martine Maggi, a senior from Marietta, Georgia, pursuing degrees in physics and mathematics, said the ÎçÒ¹¿ì²¥ SPS chapter aims to get students out of their comfort zone to help them grow.
"With physics majors, it's not surprising that a lot of them are introverted," Maggi said. "Science is not a solitary experience. It is a collaborative experience. We are setting students up for success in their future careers when they have to work in teams."
She sees the award as a testimony to the efforts of the group's leadership team in bouncing back from COVID-19.
"I'm very proud of what we've done with the club. Coming back from COVID, the community had fizzled," Maggi said. "It was an uphill climb to rebuild it."
